Geography

Geography at A level is a balance of both human and physical units, including coastal systems, tectonic hazards and changing places. 

We follow the WJEC AS and A level syllabus, and our department has earned the prestigious Geographical Association Secondary Geography Quality Mark (SGQM) for the exceptional geographical education provided at Howell’s School, Llandaff.

Why study Geography?

A key feature of the course is the use of ICT to enhance your geographical skills and understanding, including the use of professional-standard GIS software (ArcGIS online) and mobile devices for digital mapping in the field. By studying Geography at AS and A level, you’ll develop into a highly-skilled, critical thinker and independent learner—qualities that make geographers highly sought after by employers.

Does the AS count towards the A level or is it a standalone qualification?

The AS qualification can be studied as a standalone qualification and is also worth 40% of the overall A level. 


How will you be assessed?

AS 

Unit 1: 2 hours (24% of A level), 

Unit 2: 1 hour 30 minutes (16% of A level). 

A2 

Unit 3: 2 hours (24% of A level) 

Unit 4: 2 hours (16% of A level) 

Unit 5: Non-Exam Assessment – 3,000-4,000 words (20% of A level) – marked by teachers, moderated by WJEC (20% of qualification).
