Cardiff and Vale Primary 5s National Tournament Qualifier

On Tuesday, Howell’s Prep School proudly participated in the Cardiff and Vale Primary 5s National Tournament Qualifier, fielding two teams: one from Year 5 and one from Year 6. Both teams demonstrated exceptional talent, teamwork, and sportsmanship, making the day a memorable experience for all involved.

Morning group stage

The Year 6 team performed outstandingly, progressing to the top group stage in the afternoon. Their skilful play and determination were evident throughout the morning. The Year 5 team, competing against older players, showed incredible resilience and technique. Finishing second in their group, they earned a well-deserved spot in the Plate competition. This achievement was especially impressive as they were playing a year above their age group, showcasing their potential and dedication.

Afternoon top group stage

The Year 6 team started the afternoon’s top group stage with confidence, securing victories in their first two games with scores of 3-1 and 3-0. However, a break in play seemed to disrupt their momentum, and they faced a 3-0 loss in their third game—against the eventual tournament winners. Despite this setback, the team rallied, winning their final match 2-0, leaving the result dependent on the last game between St Illtyd’s and Lakeside.

In a dramatic finish, St Illtyd’s managed to score a second goal in the final minute, clinching a 2-0 victory and the tournament title. Although Howell’s finished with the same points as St Illtyd’s, the latter edged out the win due to a superior goal difference. Despite this narrow defeat, our Year 6 team’s performance was exemplary, and they remain strong contenders to qualify for Finals Day in March as one of the highest-ranked runners-up.

Year 5’s strong showing in the Plate competition

Meanwhile, the Year 5 team continued to impress during the afternoon’s Plate competition. They played four highly competitive matches, finishing in 3rd place. Their determination, skill, and sportsmanship were evident throughout, and they represented the school with pride.

A proud day for Howell’s

Reflecting on the event, Howell’s School would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to St Illtyd’s for their victory. We also wish to thank the Cardiff & Vale Schools organisers and officials for their hard work and support. Most importantly, we are incredibly proud of both our Year 5 and Year 6 teams. Their efforts left everyone feeling inspired and excited for future tournaments.

Well done to all our players for their exceptional performances! We look forward to more successes ahead.
