Discover Our Dynamic Curriculum

At Howell’s School, our curriculum is thoughtfully designed to inspire, challenge and empower every girl to achieve her full potential.

At its heart are Mathematics and English, forming a strong academic foundation that ensures our girls develop excellent literacy, numeracy and critical thinking skills. From there, our curriculum broadens into a rich and varied programme that reflects our expertise in girls’ education and our belief in educating the whole child.

As specialists in educating girls, we have developed a bespoke curriculum that is shaped by our values, celebrates strong female role models, and encourages curiosity, confidence and ambition. Learning at Howell’s goes beyond subject knowledge – it nurtures resilience, leadership and a deep sense of self-belief.

We are proud to offer specialist teaching in key areas, including Swimming, Physical Education and Music, ensuring that pupils benefit from expert instruction from an early age. A modern languages pathway begins in Year 3, with French and Spanish taught by specialists to foster linguistic confidence and cultural awareness.

Our forward-thinking curriculum also incorporates vital life skills such as financial literacy and sustainability, preparing our girls to navigate and positively influence an ever-changing world. These elements equip pupils with the knowledge, values and independence they need for their future education, careers and lives beyond school.

Everything we do is underpinned by our commitment to excellence, inclusion and opportunity—ensuring that every girl feels supported, challenged and inspired.

Sport

Sport is a central part of life at Howell’s Prep, helping girls develop confidence, resilience, leadership skills and a lifelong love of physical activity. Weekly swimming and two PE lessons are part of the curriculum, with girls taking part in a wide range of sports including football, hockey, netball, gymnastics, dance and athletics. They also benefit from specialist coaching and teaching from sports staff in the Senior School. Talented athletes are further supported through the school’s specialist TAP programme, which helps them develop and reach their full potential.

Music & Performing Arts

Music and Performing Arts are a vibrant and much-loved part of life at Howell’s Prep, helping girls develop confidence, creativity and a lifelong appreciation of performance. Weekly specialist music lessons are led by our Director of Prep Music, Mr Beckett, from Nursery to Year 6, ensuring all girls receive expert tuition from the very start of their journey.

In Years 3 to 5, girls learn a different orchestral instrument each year—strings in Year 3, brass in Year 4 and woodwind in Year 5—with all instruments provided by the school. Regular Tea Concerts, beginning in Reception, give girls frequent opportunities to perform solo in a supportive setting and build confidence on stage.

Our school productions are a highlight of the year, with West End–worthy performances staged across Reception–Year 2, Years 3–4 and Years 5–6, ensuring every girl has the chance to take on a meaningful role and shine in performance.

Languages

Languages play a key role in helping girls develop curiosity about the wider world and confidence in communication. We are proud to teach Welsh from Nursery age, supporting early language development and cultural understanding. From Year 3 to Year 6, all girls also learn French and Spanish through weekly lessons, building strong foundations in modern foreign languages.
