Discover Our Dynamic Curriculum

We run a topic-based curriculum, meaning that all subjects are linked to a different topic every term. This follows the national curriculum, with strong elements of the Welsh curriculum also integrated.

Our approach

As an independent school, we have the flexibility to adapt the curriculum to make learning more engaging and relevant, bringing subjects and topics to life in unique ways.

The core curriculum subjects are English, Maths, Science, Humanities, Art, DT, ICT, RE, PSHE, and Music. Over and above these, we include:

  • French and Spanish for all girls in Years 3 to 6 (weekly)
  • Swimming for all girls from Nursery to Year 6 (weekly)
  • PE for all girls from Nursery to Year 6 (three times a week)

Your daughter’s progress

We will keep you informed of your daughter’s progress through two Parents’ Evenings each academic year, along with an end-of-year written report. Success comes in little steps and giant-sized leaps, and we celebrate each milestone along the way.

Of course, there is constant informal monitoring at all times. Naturally, we will alert you if we pick up anything that concerns us; and we would ask you to contact your daughter’s class teacher if you have any worries you would like to discuss.

At Howell’s, we foster a warm and supportive environment where every girl is valued. While our kindness and positivity shine through, we are also driven by purpose and backed by strong academic performance.

Assessment

To ensure that your daughter’s progress is properly evaluated, we run the following assessments:

  • Phonics: Phonics assessments take place termly for girls in Reception and Years 1 and 2.
  • English: Writing, reading, and spelling are assessed termly for all girls from Reception to Year 6.
  • Maths: Big Maths tests take place weekly for all girls from Reception to Year 6 (on paper for Reception to Year 2 and online for Year 3 upwards).
  • Year 7 Entrance Exam: the examinations for entry into the Senior School are written papers in English and Mathematics, sat in the January of Year 6.
